Abe

This is my submission for the DPW Challenge this week. I chose the black and white option of the challenge, using a limited palette of Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White. To help me focus on painting the range of values, I turned the painting upside down.  It really helped me to see shapes vs. features. When doing a portrait, I tend to get lost in drawing the likeness of a person, and lose sight of painting what I see.

Here are a couple of quotes that I found from Abraham Lincoln:

"Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right."

-and on a lighter note:

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

  1. Fantastic portrait of Abe! I think I will certainly try the upside down method.Even though this painting is shades of grey, you have given it life and expression with your lively brushstrokes.

  3. "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." And paintings!
